How to make your own jeans - Sewing Jeans
So you want to make your own jeans? If you’re a seasoned sewer, I’m sure this is a piece of cake for you. However, if you’re a novice then a few sewing lessons would be your first step before you could make a pair of jeans like Citizens of Humanity Jeans or True Religion Jeans.
Have no fear, you can do it. Always remember that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. Making your own clothes is satisfying and rewarding. There’s nothing like that feeling of accomplishment and they’ll be your own unique brand. Besides you’ll save yourself a bundle of money by doing it yourself.
So what do you need to make your own fashion jeans? First off you’ll need a sewing machine. If you don’t have one, you can purchase a new one or check your local paper under items for sale. You just might find a good second hand one at a reasonable price. Also check with your friends and relatives. Then you’ll need a few lessons. I’m sure someone in the neighborhood is a seasoned professional.
The second thing you’ll need is Denim. Go to your local craft or discount store. I’m sure that they’ll be more than happy to steer you in the right direction. Make sure you purchase “jeans grade” denim. There are lots of colors available.
Third you want to select a pattern or patterns you like. Use an old pair of comfortable jeans as a pattern. Be sure to leave 1/4 inch seam allowances around the edges. Or your local craft or discount store will have a variety to choose from. Or you can look online. You’ll want a pattern that is strictly for jeans.
You’ll also need a needle, bobbin, thread, scissors, and some optional things like buttons, trim, glitter, patches.
Before you purchase any of the above do the most important thing - Take your measurements. Measure your waist and hips. Measure your hips at their fullest point. These measurements can be used to look up the pattern size on the pattern manufacturer’s sizing chart. You need to make sure the pattern you choose includes your size.
Next, buy your pattern and fit the pattern to your body. Then take several measurements from your waist to your hips and down the legs, as well as the crotch. Write down these measurements, adding up to an inch in the waist, 3/4 inches in the crotch, and 2 inches in the hips. Doing this insures that your jeans won’t be skin tight. You can alter them depending on your likes. Compare your measurements to those on the pattern, and alter the pattern where necessary. Remember to also alter the pattern for the correct length.
Next, pre-shrink your fabric. Wash and dry the fabric on the same settings as you would use to wash finished jeans. Pre-washing the fabric will give you an idea of how the jeans will fit and also make it easier to work with the fabric.
Follow the instructions on the pattern. (Sewing patterns are typically cut out and pinned to the fabric. After the pattern pieces are pinned to the fabric, the fabric is then cut. The sewer then marks the patterns and starts sewing the pieces together to complete the project).
Just cut your fabric and sew it according to the instructions on your pattern.
Once your jeans are finished you can add trim, buttons, patches or anything else to dress them up and make them your own, one of a kind "designer" jeans. Now, who cares about Paige Preium Denim or Rock Republic Jeans.
Good Luck!!!
